OK the inspiration for the title of this blog ‘Mad Cycling In The Midday Sun’ was inspired by the ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’ as when I was out training last summer I realised (about 3 hours in) in 38 degree heat in the afternoon…that I hadn’t seen another soul at all (unless you count the 3 lizards and 2 snakes, one of which was dead) let alone another cyclist all ride, and thought I must be MAD!!!
I had been cycling and time-trial racing in the UK for many years and over many distances, (but always favoured the longer distances) and having moved to Spain in 2014 I had more time for training and started looking at the cycle racing options here. Well there’s not really anything on the time trial front! but there is no shortage of mountain biking to be had in some fantastic locations and courses.
So I raced a few local MTB races then plunged myself into ‘La Rioja’ bike race last year (2016), 3 days of MTB marathon stages…well grueling to say the least but I was hooked! MTB, xco, xcm, stage races…and the harder the better!!
This year I am riding for mcsegre – Coluer Ixcor, with a Coluer Poison carbon 29er MTB and hand made carbon wheels from Sixth Element Wheels. and I will be racing hard! initially at maters level as I am racing the MTB in the World Masters Games and then I wil change to Elite for the remainder of the season and try to gain as many UCI points as I can ready to race World Cup in 2018…aim high!
I also hope to target the World 24 hour time trial championships at the end of the year, having done the Spanish 24h championships last year accruing 645km!!!
But anyway you can read all about it on my blog page.
