OK the inspiration for the title of this blog ‘Mad Cycling In The Midday Sun’ was inspired by the ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’ as when I was out training in the summer, when I realised (about 3 hours in) in, in 38 degree heat in the afternoon…that I hadn’t seen another soul at all (unless you count the 3 lizards and 2 snakes, one of which was dead) let alone another cyclist all ride, and thought I must be MAD!!!
I had been cycling and time-trial racing in the UK for many years and over many distances, having moved to Spain in 2014 I had more time for training and started looking at the cycle racing options here. Well there’s not really anything on the time trial front! but there is no shortage of mountain biking to be had in some fantastic locations and courses.
So I raced a few local MTB races then plunged myself into ‘La Rioja’ bike race (in 2016), 3 days of MTB marathon stages…well gruelling to say the least but I was hooked! MTB, XCO, XCM and stage races…the tougher the better!!
So in 2017 I was asked if I would ride for MotoClub Segre – who are supported by Coluer Bikes and Ixcor clothing, I was provided with a Coluer ‘Poison’ carbon 29er hard-tail MTB and I had hand built carbon wheels provided from a UK company ‘Sixth Element Wheels’. I started 2017 with a Masters licence and went to New Zealand to race the MTB in the World Masters Games, on return I changed to ‘Elite’ for the remainder of the season. I raced La Rioja stage race again and 2 XCO races never finishing out of the top 10 and accrued 52 points in these few races…I then went to the UK for the National championships but had a small accident on the course putting myself in hospital with a dislocated and broken shoulder!
Well that was season over…but that’s racing! I should still finish the season in the top 500 on UCI rankings and rehab has gone well so I’m looking forward to 2018 with the continued support of MotoClub, Sixth Element and Coluer.
